Joining Lines

Railways often have "wye" junctions that look like curved triangles that lie up against the mainline. To draw these I first draw the mainline as the base of the triangle, then draw the two curved sections meeting at the apex.

Now how do I join those two halfs together to make a single object? Am I correct in thinking that the tool will always add another segment as part of its action? If so, should I leave an empty section in the wye? Or simply use the tool and make a zero-length segment?
