Recently we received many emails with suggestion of improvements of ShareMap service.

Community drives ShareMap project so I decided to create topic where we can all share our proposals for next months of ShareMap development.

So - if you miss anything in ShareMap. If some functions are annoying for you - here is a good place to write about it.

Well, at first its a great site.
I would like to to bring my piece, I expect my suggestion do not weigh to much in workload. possibly there are options I've not get so, that is may be not an improvement but just direction of use...

- Edit mode :
-- I would make the behavior of the Compoment widget a bit more predictable, it covers a lot of space and there are many clics for going to show popup box for eg.
-- I would make possible to import / export GPx files;
-- I would make possible to draw routes and save / export as gpx.
-- I would make possible to define styles of compoments. Then to draw some compoments of a certain type I would simply change the style.
-- I would make possible to layer the result of several maps to make one. But this wont be a merge, a change on one of the original maps would impact the result of the merge...
-- I would make possible to add a "category" to the compoments and to select all the compoments of a given category.
-- It would be remarkable usefull to select several compoments and to execute a command for the selected set of compoments.

- View mode : It's a shame that the viewer has a passive role only.
-- I would povide him a mesurement tool.
-- I would make possible to tick/untick the visible compoments per category (the category mentioned above)

- Other outputs
-- The Jpeg, I think you understand make sense but is not always usefull, and viewport proposes the stric minimum. Probably the need is the surface covered (current viewport) and the zoom level to be applyed. Then a big Jpeg can come ! In this case a download file is probably more efficient !

Well at the momment it's all, hope I dont look too stupid with this suggestions :o)

Hi Olavax, thanks for your voice. Many of your suggestions are already on our roadmap.

I would make the behavior of the Compoment widget a bit more predictable, it covers a lot of space and there are many clics for going to show popup box for eg.

Yes, we are trying all the time to increasy easy of use. We know that some more complicated scenarios are not straightforward for people who are starting they advanture with ShareMap.

I would make possible to import / export GPx files

Currently it this possible to import GPX (using import button). We are working on export functions.

I would make possible to define styles of compoments. Then to draw some compoments of a certain type I would simply change the style.

Good concept. Styling is currently handled by putting component in container and using Apply to container button which applies component styles to all components in container. The problem is styles is not technical but concept - how to show styles saving idea to be clear in user interface.

I would make possible to layer the result of several maps to make one. But this wont be a merge, a change on one of the original maps would impact the result of the merge...

We are working on this :) This feature will be called soft link - so two maps will be composed together and there will be a button Update map from source.

I would make possible to add a "category" to the compoments and to select all the compoments of a given category.

Can you write something more about this concept?

I would povide him a mesurement tool.

Good idea

I would make possible to tick/untick the visible compoments per category (the category mentioned above)

Can you give me an example of category?

Other outputs

Yes SVG and JPEG (which is just rendition of SVG) sometimes are not very useful for viewing, but there are two reason two provide this tool - publishing rendered maps on wikipedia and allowing user to post process his map for example in Adobe Illustrator and use it in printed materials. Also the problem with SVG/JPEG with embeded backgrounds is that this mechanism relay on OSM export feature. We don't have currently own OSM instance (infrastructure problems) so we have to rely on foundation server which sometimes are very slow and sometimes does not work at all.

Regards and waiting for answer

Thank for the former answers. I'm testing them currently. Cant wait the improvement of "softlink"

Regarding the category concept : "I would make possible to add a "category" to the compoments and to select all the compoments of a given category."

Use case:
I draw my own map of france where I add some conpoments to highlight:
- castles
- cheeses
- Monuments
- viewpoints
- Scenic roads (from gpx)
Then, there is a lot on the same map and at edition time it's getting confusing.
So I give a category name and one or value to each set of this compoments to put all the castles together etc...
Please note that in some occasions, the compoment can refer to several categories : Eiffel tour is both a monument and a view point. You have a compoment container that looks as a good starting point but I think that from a user point of view this can be a bit extended.

At Viewing time, the user can choses among the given categories the one he like to make appear with a tick on the given category list. If I'm intrested in cheese (hummmm) only for exemple... With a similar widget as the LAYERS box the user can focus on the one we like and take benefit from a list view.

Hope this clear....

ADDITIONAL FEATURE:
- I would make possible to center the map view from the compoment item of the compoment list. This should be applicable both in edition and user view (from the above category for eg)

IMPROVEMENT:
In the compoment widget the "Name: _______" field doesnt provide much for me. I think it's more useful for debug no ? :o) Something like Point a_807801605_61 in the compoment list doesnt provide as much as the "Label Text: My Home!"
So, probably that a work arround would be to overwrite the "Name:" as soon as a "Label text" exist or something similar.

Enjoy your week end :o)
Thanks.

Hi Olavx,
for simply splitting objects inside different categories I think that object tree will be sufficient. You can then easily apply style to all object in container for example to set icon for all castles as castle symbol. But scenario about one object inside many categories is possible I have to think about this.

Adding category layer select is a good idea - we are currently at stage of introducing BETA HTML5 maps so maybe it is a good time to do this.

Abou question about centering - yes it is possible. But what do you think should trigger this centering mechanism to not confuse user?

About the names - the names of the component are only used in the component tree. It is good idea to overwrite component name with label text (if this is applicable).

About question about centering - yes it is possible. But what do you think should trigger this centering mechanism to not confuse user?
- Double clic makes sense
- alternatively Right-clic-->Center on map.
I'm not sure about the zoom level : Probably no change... I'm hesitating about the centering in case of a line or figure : center of gravity ? window inclusive ? .

About the names
The names of the component are only used in the component tree <-- yes an I would very much prefer to have the one typed. This is a "technical oriented design remains" :o)

About Layers widget:
- I think that when I select a container compoment, all the compoment on the map shall look selected as when one only is selected .
- I think that when a container compoment is expanded the fact to drop a single compoment on the bellow of the container line works fine. However, When at some point we want to put all the many single compoments in set of containers, it happend that the list is full of expanded containers and it's getting very painfull to drag and drop the single compoments.--> I think that it would be better if it was possible to drop on a non-expended compoment container; this probably mean that instead of droping "bellow" the container we will have to drop "on" the container. Hope I'm clear :o)

Wording / extra button:
On the foot of LAYERS widget is a button "remove" I think it means "delete" as in the contextual menu. As there is a contextual men, I suggest to remove the "remove" button and save space for something else.

Edit mode user friendly:
Clic an Point compoment on the map: "Point appearence" widget is displayed. Clic on Show Popupbox : Popup box widget appear. It's a shame that there is no simple and rapid action to go back to the "Point appearence".

Improvement for popup box:
- Image URL / Video ID are not very self explanatory and I dont know what to put into.
- That would be great to have a text line to put un URL in. Then this URL would activated when the viewer clic on the name of the objet on the map.

Again your site make sense, I wonder how you will get money from this ?

Thanks for feedback!

I implemented simple improvements proposed by you:
* Center on map (currently only edit view in context menu)
* Remove was replaced with Delete component
* Label name is automaticaly set as component name
* It is possible to return from show popup box by clicking Back to point properties
* About links - currently is possible to put link inside popup box. It is possible to create automatic link by
clicking, but first of all we have to be sure that user will understand what is going on.

I also agree with most more advanced ones, but its implementation will take more time, and we consider its implementation in next major rollout.

About business model - it is briefly described in this article http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:ShareMap/Principles_and_goals , but if you have any suggestions let me know by email

Hello,

Some returns of experiences :

* Center on map (currently only edit view in context menu)

work great !

* Remove was replaced with Delete component

Still have remove. In addition, the right clic context menu on an item from the map proposes "cut component" :o)

* Label name is automaticaly set as component name

Great. However it seams that in some occsaion the stress ont he letters (éçàè etc...) gets changed in crazy caracteres. Not sure if it was the case before but some names on my map have gone. Not sure either if this is related to this improvment.

* It is possible to return from show popup box by clicking Back to point properties

Wonderful!

* About links - currently is possible to put link inside popup box. It is possible to create automatic link by
clicking, but first of all we have to be sure that user will understand what is going on.

Probably, it is just that i my too lazy to enter the tags in the popup box.

OTHER IMPROVEMENT
- It doesnt appear clearly howto delete a point of a map line or polygone. I least I didnt find how to.
- When an area fully overlaps an other one, it is not possible to get the popup from the secound or any other actions. I think that I should, at least from the edge of the area for exemple.
- Is it possible to add a 'remember me' feature in the login box ?
- My computer screen is not that large and I'm strungling space to display all the widgets. I would recomand to change a bit the presentation and increase the density of the elements.
- save a map to an other name would allows the users to keep differents stages of their work and the minimum of a recover feature. It would be useful as sometome some big changes can be done with heavy works to go back to the initial stage.

WARNINGS BUGS
- a bug in the "image url" of a compoment: The popup text opens without the image, then none of popup works after this first bug!
- when I switch the browser full page, I can type in the popup box ?!?!

Many thanks for your work, I very enjoy your server.

Cheers

Hi, thanks for all feedback, I will try tomorrow address all the bugs you spotted, but now for quick I can answer one question - how to delete point from line or polygon. You have to hold CTRL (or CMD on Mac) and click on point, this is not very straightforward and I think this operation should be added to mouse context menu.
